Ottawa Winterlude

I have visited Ottawa many times, and lived there from September, 2013 to August, 2014, while I completed the first year of a Master’s program at Carleton University. I loved living there and would move back if the opportunity presented itself.

During the winter, for a period of approximately two weeks, the Ottawa-Gatineau region celebrates Winterlude or Bal de Neige for our Francophone friends. There are, of course, lots of outdoor activities, such as skating on the Rideau Canal or viewing the beautiful ice sculptures in the Crystal Garden in Confederation Park. There are indoor events too, like Bright Nights: The Baltic-Nordic Film Festival. I watched two films in the 2014 festival and really enjoyed them.

In honour of this year’s festivities, which began Friday, January 29 and runs until Monday, February 15, here are some of my favourite photos from Winterlude, 2014.

The image below was sponsored by Veterans Affairs Canada to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of WWI. This sculpture is inspired by “troop trains” that carried young volunteers to Valcartier, Quebec to undergo training.

The sculpture in the photo below was created by some talented local brothers: Ted and Tyler Hayes from London and St. Thomas respectively! Here’s a YouTube video (by N&MBA) of them making their Winterlude 2013 creation.

Depending on weather conditions, you can skate on the “World’s Largest Skating Rink,” on the Rideau Canal during Winterlude, and throughout the winter.

And here is one last photo for fun, taken by a kind passerby. This is me out for a skate on the canal. Enjoy Winterlude!
